William, the eldest of four children, was born at Roehampton, Surrey, in 1896 to William Archer, a commercial agent, and Matilda Isabel Bice of Heaton Moor, Stockport. He was educated at Liverpool College, boarding with another family while there, and Manchester Grammar School.
William joined the University Officer Training Corps in January 1915 and was gazetted in December 1915. He was killed leading his men during an attack at Falfemont Farm, near Guillemont in France in September 1916.
