Stanley was the son of Mark, a wholesale fruiterer, and Hannah Jackson of Oldham and later Blackpool. He was born in 1890 and attended Hulme Grammar School, Oldham before entering Manchester University in 1913. He enlisted in the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (U.P.S), and was later commissioned with the Manchester regiment. He served on the Western Front and has no known grave. He left effects worth £295 1s 7d to his father.
