Samuel was born on 30th September 1884 in Manchester to James Kershaw, a solicitor. He was educated at Bilton Grange near Rugby and Cheltenham College. He joined the University Officer Training Corps on 26th November 1915, left on 22nd February 1916 and was gazetted to the Lancashire Fusiliers 8 months later. He was killed while serving in France in May 1917. He left effects worth £3893 18s 1d to Harold Slaney Kershaw, a solicitor.
