Samuel was the eldest son of Samuel Fernyhough of Handforth. He was born in 1888 at Cheadle and attended Stockport Grammar School. From February to May 1915 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. The 1922 Roll of Service notes him as an architectural student, but does not indicate this to have been at Manchester University. He was gazetted in April 1915, wounded once during his service, and died at Tetney Camp near Grimsby following an operation in May 1918.
