Robert was born in 1893 at Uddingston, Glasgow to Robert and Helen Lawrie Grant of Prestwich. He attended Stand Grammar School, joined Manchester University in 1909, and was later employed by Stewart and Lloyd’s Ltd.
Having enlisted on 20th November 1914 as a private in the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers John was gazetted in September 1916, transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was wounded during his service. He was killed on 13th June 1917 in an incident involving his Spad VII aircraft. His will was worth £1076.
