Richard was the youngest son of Frank and Emma Scholfield, born in 1891 at Prestwich. He was educated at Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School, and Rossall School. At the latter he spent five years in the Cadet Corps and the Bisley eight rifle club. He entered St. John’s College, Cambridge in October 1910 and obtained a degree in law in 1913. He attended law classes at Manchester University and was later articled to the Town Clerk of Salford.
At the outbreak of war Richard was gazetted to the 6th King’s Own which proceeded to Gallipoli in June 1915 where he was killed leading his men in a charge on the enemy position.
He left £351 0s. 11d. to his mother.
