Philip was born in 1885 in Lowton near Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, the son of John and Anne Green. He entered Manchester University in 1903 to study Medicine graduating with an M.B and Ch.B in 1911. Married to Margaret Katharena Green he became an X-Ray Specialist working at Crescent Road Military Hospital in Crumpsall where he was Senior House Surgeon. He was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Captain in 1916 later serving on the Western Front and in Mesopotamia. He died of influenza on 13th November 1918, just two days after the War ended at Wimereux, France while serving with the 33rd Stationary Hospital R.A.M.C. He left effects worth £7450 3s 5d to his wife.
