Norman was the son of Fred Wilkinson, an ex-president of Lancashire County Teachers Association. He was born in 1889 at Haslingden. He was educated at Newchurch Grammar School where he won an All-England Scholarship to Christ’s Hospital. He joined Manchester University in 1907 to study medicine. In October 1914 Norman was gazetted to the Manchester Regiment, and during his service spent some time attached to the Norfolk Regiment and the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment. He was killed near St. Quentin in 1918.
