Joseph was born in 1891 at Stalybridge to Peter and Elizabeth Walsh. He was educated at Hyde County Secondary School and started at Manchester University in 1907. In 1909 he gained a BSc. , a further qualification in mathematics in 1911 followed by a masters and teaching diploma in 1912. After his studies he took up a post as a maths master at Philip’s Grammar School, Birmingham.
Joseph enlisted in January 1916 in the 29th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and later transferred to the Royal Engineers Chemical Section. He died on 7th May 1917 at 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Bapaume, of wounds received near Bullecourt.
