John Whalley was born in 1892 to George and Elizabeth Whalley of Chorley, Lancashire. He was a colourist with Jos Cunliffe, Calico Printers, Whittle-le-Woods, near Chorley. In 1909 he enrolled as an evening student on Science and Technology courses. He served on the Western Front.
