John was born in 1892 to George and Annie Brocklehurst of Marple. He was one of three sons. John was educated at King William’s College on the Isle of Man and from 1911 was engaged in business as manufacturer of perfume in Manchester. He was a keen sportsman who played for the Heaton Moor Rugby Team.
Five weeks after the outbreak of war he joined the Army, as a private in the Royal Fusiliers. In november 1915 he obtained a commission and was gazetted to the 14th Battalion Manchester Regiment stationed at Lichfield. In September 1915 his unit embarked for Gallipoli where he was killed in action on 1st November.
