John was the son of John and Martha Fletcher of Bolton. He was born in 1896 and attended Bolton School and Hutton Grammar School. In 1914 he entered Manchester University in 1914 to study engineering. He was also an apprentice at Horwich Locomotive Works, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. He was a member of the Officer Training Corps from October to December 1914 and enlisted with the 7th Battalion Manchester Regiment. On 20th June 1918 he was gazetted with The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front and was wounded twice. He was killed at Anneux, near Cambrai, on 28th September 1918.
