Harold was born in 1897 at Blackburn to John & Gertrude McLellan. He was educated at University School, Southport, and entered Manchester University in 1912 to study for a Certificate in Technology in Mechanical Engineering. He was apprenticed to Mather and Platt Ltd, Newton Heath, Manchester.
Harold enlisted on 3rd September 1914, and was gazetted on 13th April 1915. He was shot in the head near Ovilliers-la-Boiselle, France, on 9th July 1916. His colonel wrote: “I am very sorry to lose him, as he was an excellent officer and showed great courage, and he was much liked by his brother officers. He was doing very good work when hit.”
