Gilbert was the son of Job, a colliery agent, and Eliza Taylor of Chorlton-cum-Hardy. He was born in 1896 at Pendleton, educated at Strawberry Road British School, Pendleton and British School Altrincham. He was a clerk to a stock and share broker. From April to August 1915 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. Commissioned into the York and Lancaster Regiment he died of Pneumonia on 13th July 1918 at Colchester Military Hospital. He left effects worth £415 0s 11d to his father.
