George was born in 1896 to John and Agnes Mary Cumming of Crewe. He attended Crewe Secondary School and came to Manchester University to study Medicine in 1914. George joined the University Officer Training Corps on 19th October 1914 and was gazetted 11 months later, after completing the first year of his course, into the South Lancashire Regiment. He was shot in the head and killed while negotiating wire entanglements during the Battle of the Somme.
