Former student of cotton weaving.
George was born on 6th October 1892, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Holden, of Brook Lea Crescent, Cheadle, Cheshire. His father was a partner in Smethurst and Holden, Shirt Makers, Salford. George was educated at Manchester Grammar School (1904-07) and Rydal Mount, Colwyn Bay. He registered with The Tech in 1909-10 as an evening student for 1st Year Cotton Weaving, and successfully proceeded to the second year. He was the secretary of Cheadle Wesleyan Sunday School, and was well known among local lacrosse and tennis players.
A Private J.S. Cragg stated that “his death occurred during a big engagement in which a great many laid down their lives for their country and home. I learn from a friend that he was in the forefront of the fight and his end was instantaneous, without the slightest suffering.”
