Ernest was born in 1889, the fifth son of Mr T. and Mrs. Elizabeth Bateson of Leeds. At 21 he was employed as an Assistant Chemist by Taylor Brothers and Co. Ltd., Trafford Park, a steel tyre manufacturers. In 1910 he registered as an evening student on Science and Technology courses at The Tech. He continued his studies in 1911-12. He was a winger for Eccles Rugby Club and played for Eccles Cricket Club second eleven.
He went to Gallipoli on 5th May 1915 and was killed just one month later.
