Cyril was born in 1891 in Manchester to John Henry Helsby. He was educated at Colwyn Bay Higher Grade School and Salford Technical School. A cotton goods manufacturer he joined the University Office Training Corps on 25th October 1915 and left on 26th January 1916 when he enlisted with the 10th Battalion (Scottish) King’s Liverpool Regiment. He was killed during the Battle of the Somme in August 1916 while serving with the 13th Battalion. On 18th November 1916 his parents posted a notice in the Manchester Guardian seeking information on his whereabouts having heard that he may have only been wounded and taken prisoner. No news appears to have been received and his body was not recovered.
