Bert was the only son of John Joseph, landlord of a pub, and Mary Ann Scott Hutchinson. He was born on 7th November 1899 at Radcliffe and educated at Bury Grammar School (1911-191) where he was part of the School Officer Training Corps and played football. From November 1916 to June 1917 he was a member of the University Officer Training School. He worked in the building department of C.W.S. He served on the Western Front and died of wounds in hospital August 1918.
