Alfred was born at Newcastle-Under-Lyne in 1893 to George Saunders, a grocer, and educated at the local high school where he captained the fives and obtained his cap for cricket. He entered Manchester University in 1913 to study medicine.
Alfred enlisted as a private on 29th August 1914, was gazetted in January 1915 and became a Lewis gun officer. He died near High Wood on the Somme in late July 1916. Shortly before his death he had been offered a captaincy, but he turned it down because of his attachment to the men whom he commanded. He left effects worth £379 0s 4d to his father.
