Alexander was born on 24th December 1892 at Northampton to H.J. Ross, and was the grandson of the late Captain Alexander Ross, 64th Regiment. He was educated at Manchester Municipal Secondary School and in 1911 entered Manchester University as a Manchester Corporation Scholar. The Tech registers show that his Manchester address was 15 Birch Hall Lane, Manchester, and Miss E. J. Ross, School of Domestic Economy, Manchester, Superintendent was listed for Parent/Guardian. In 1914 he was awarded BSc Technology Division II (Electrical Engineering).
A member of the Manchester University Officer Training Corps from October 1911 to September 1914, Alexander enlisted in September 1914 to 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was drafted to France in November 1915, took part in operations around Arras and later at the Somme. He was killed in action at High Wood on 20th July 2916.
