Former student of chemistry.
Frederick was born on 22nd June 1893. Both his parents, William Frederick and Elizabeth Knott, were teachers and his father was Secretary of the Ashton-Under-Lyne district of the Lancashire Education Committee. He was educated at Audenshaw Undenominational School and Ashton Secondary School. In September 1910 he entered Manchester University as a science undergraduate on a scholarship. He obtained a BSc. Chemistry in 1913 and was awarded an MSc. in 1914.
Frederick was a member of the University Officer Training Corps and on the outbreak of war was immediately gazetted. In May 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant. An officer from the same unit reported that he was killed by a shell which exploded next to him on 21st March 1916.
Frederick’s younger brother, Leonard Sandham Knott, served with the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and died in Belgium in November 1917.
