Lieutenant, 16th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.
Killed in action 10th March 1916, aged 21.
Buried in Authuile Cemetery, France.
Former member of the University Officer Traning Corps.
Robert was the grandson of Colonel W. Sharrat and the youngest of three sons of Albert Varey Sharrat, a builder, and his wife Kate. He was educated at Wellington School in Heaton Moor and Manchester Grammar School (1906-1910). He passed his Matriculation Examination in July 1910 and entered the Magistrates Clerk’s Office, Manchester. He was a keen sportsman, a good shot and a very strong swimmer.
Robert joined the University Officer Training Corps in 1912 and in November 1914 was gazetted to the Lancashire Fusiliers. A year later he went to France where he commanded the wiring company of his battalion. He was promoted in March 1916 to Lieutenant and died shortly after during nighttime wiring operations when his unit came under artillery bombardment. A Colonel who wrote to his parents described him as being courageous and having a “fearless manner”.
Both of Robert’s brothers served in the army and survived the war. Robert left effects worth £518 2s 4d to his father.
