Benjamin was born in 1869 at Macclesfield to a silk weaver and educated at Christ Church School in the town. In 1885 he was a grocer with the Co-operative Society in Macclesfield and joined the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Manchester Regiment. He married Jane Ash in February 1901 and was serving as a Colour Serjeant in the Rifle Brigade. By 1911 he had left the Army, was running his own drapery business and had several children.
The 1922 Roll of Service says that Benjamin was (or had been) employed at the University as a night watchman. He was recalled to the Rife Brigade when war broke out and trained in Aldersot. Benjamin’s unit left England on 19th May 1915. A little under six months later he was wounded and admitted to hospital where he died on 4th November 1915.
