Leonard was born on 13th February 1884 at Stalybridge to Richard Needham, a Justice of the Peace, and his wife Harriet. He attended Manchester Grammar School, entered King William’s College on the Isle of Man in September 1887 and started studying medicine at the University of Manchester in 1900, residing at Dalton Hall. He went on to become a pharmacist.
Leonard enlisted in December 1914 and was killed at Loos on the 8th October 1915. His older brother, Arthur, died in August 1916 on the Somme. Leonard left effects worth £785 16s. 9d. to James Gaff, a medical practioner.
