John was born in 1894 at Maldon in Essex to James Whitrow, an Excise Supervisor, of Crumpsall, Manchester. He was educated at St. Margaret’s School in Crumpsall and was a member of the Church Lad’s Brigade. He entered Manchester University in 1911 and obtained a Certificate of Technology Mechanical Engineering in 1914. After his studies he was employed by British Westinghouse as an apprentice engineer.
John was a member of the Officer Training Corps from October 1912 to October 1914. He enlisted on 5th January 1915, became a signaller in his unit, went to France in June 1915 and was killed at the Battle of Loos.
