Thomas was born in 1888 and was the youngest son of Rochdale solicitor Edward Lyon Taylor. He was educated at Mill Hill School and while articled as a solictor’s clerk attended law classes at Manchester University graduating with honours in 1910. He was also awarded the John Peacock Prize of the Manchester Law Association. He was a member of Castleton Cricket Club.
In September 1914 Thomas enlisted in the Public Schools’ Battalion and was gazetted in October 1914 to the Lancashire Fusiliers. In April 1915 his unit went to Egypt and then in May to Gallipoli. He received a minor scalp wound on the 4th June which resulted in him spending some time in hospital in Eygpt. Thomas rejoined his unit and was killed on the 7th August 1915 when his unit was involved in hand to hand fighting for a position known as The Vineyard.
