John was born in 1881 to James, a Cotton Merchant, and Penelope Tyldesley of Urmston. John was the third of six children. In 1897-98 he was enrolled as a City and Guilds student on science courses at The Tech. He married in 1910 at Barton Upon Irwell and was unemployed when war broke out.
A former volunteer in the 4th Manchester Regiment he enlisted with 6th Manchester Regiment on 1st September 1914 aged 33 years and 5months and was 5 foot 7 inches tall. A few days later he embarked for Egypt. He died, at sea, from wounds received in action at Gallipoli.
