Arthur was born on 12th April 1888 at Adlington near Chorley to Arthur Thomas and Madge Middleton. He was educated at Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School, Old College, Windermere, and Hanover, Germany. He entered Manchester University in 1905, and was awarded a Certificate in Technology (Textile Industries) in 1907. He was employed by T. Middleton and Co Ltd., Adlington, a coloured cotton goods manufacturer. He played for Bolton Rugby Union Football Club until it was disbanded. He was also actively involved in the St. John’s Mission at Lostock, near Preston, where he taught a class of boys.
Arthur was gazetted on 29th August 1914 into 8th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He served in Egypt and made rapid progress with his training despite no previous experience and undertaking scouting work with his battalion and a detachment of Gurkhas. In Gallipoli he was a Scout Officer and received the congratulations of the General Officer Commanding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force for excellent work in this role. In May 1915 he was wounded and was in hospital in Alexandria for a short time. On 6/7th June, while scouting, he was wounded again, and died.
At the time of his death his younger brother was serving with the 1st/3rd East Lancashire Royal Field Artillery at Alexandria. Arthur’s father received many letters of condolences from his employees and former employees. Arthur left effects worth £1184 11s to his father.
