Gerald was born on 15th May 1899 at Heaton Moor to John Wallace Adam, a cotton spinner and his wife Ethel. He was educated at Bryn Derwent School, Old Colwyn and Oundle School (May 1914- Dec 1916). From February to December 1917 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. He enlisted with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and on 29th May 1918 he was gazetted with 3rd Battalion Leicester Regiment and in June 1918 he was attached to the 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He served in North Russia and was mentioned in despatches. He is believed to have died of dysentery in August 1919 on H.M.S. Glowworm on the Dvina, Russia. He left effects worth £278 2s 10d to his father.
