Robert was the son of Robert Owen Emmott. He was born in 1886 at Brierfield and educated at Brierfield Wesleyan School and Nelson Technical School. He entered Manchester University in 1906 and graduated with a BSc. and Technology Certificate in 1909. When war broke out he was an assistant master at Litherland Council School. He is believed to have enlisted in December 1914 with 20th Battalion King’s (Liverpool) Regiment and may have also served with the Manchester Regiment. He was for a time an acting sergeant. He was stationed in India as an instructor and died of influenza aboard HT Chupra, on his way home after the war.
