Alfred was born in 1899 at Hale, the eldest son of Edward Ernest, an accountant, and Edith Emily Groome. He was educated at Bowden College and Sedbergh School. From October 1916 to January 1917 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. In March 1917 he enlisted and on 6th October 1917 he joined Royal Flying Corps for whom he worked as a driver with the 12th Reserve Lorry Park. He died of broncho-pneumonia at Mauberge in March 1919.
