Alfred was born in 1890 at Boudja, Smyrna, Turkey. He was the son of Francis Charles, an employee of the Ottomon (Aidin) Railway, and E.J. Holton. He was privately schooled, entered Manchester University in 1912, and graduated in 19146. He was employed on the Egidir Extension of the Ottomon (Aidin) Railway under the late Dr. Hutchinson of Manchester University. In September 1914 Alfred enlisted. He served with the Royal Naval Division engineers and the Royal Marine Artillery in Gallipoli and France. He died at No. 14 General Hospital, Bologne, in February 1919 following an operation.
