John was the son of John Franklin, a municipal clerk, and Clara Templar. He was born in 1892 at Longsight and attended Fielden School, and Manchester Grammar School (1907-11). He entered Manchester University in 1911 and soon joined the University Officer Training Corps. He was gazetted Captain in October 1914 to the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and took a leading part in the formation of Public Schools Battalions. John was mentioned in despatches for his actions leading his company at the Battle of High Wood in 1916. He also acted as an instructor in infantry tactics at 8th Corps School. After the armistice he was quartered at Colonge in the army of occupation and was appointed as the Education Officer for his Brigade. He died of pneumonia at 14th General Hospital Wimereux Hospital, near Rouen, in February 1918. He left effects worth £66 6s 8d to his father.
