Alexander was born in 1892 at Tilbury to Alexander Thomson and Kathleen Orr. He was educated at Larchfield Academy, Helensburgh and Friar School, Bangor. He entered Manchester University in 1908 to study mechanical engineering. He is not recorded in the Register of Graduates. From 1st November 1908 to 30th October 1912 Alexander was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. He was working for the London and North Western Railway when war broke out. He was gazetted in September 1914 with the 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers and in January 1917 transferred to the Royal Engineers as an Anti-Gas instructor. In late November 1917 he was promoted to Captain. He served in France and Italy and was mentioned in despatches. He died on 3rd January 1919 at No. 24 Casualty Clearing Station in Italy of broncho-pneumonia. He left effects worth £240 to his widow Hilda Stewart Orr whom he had married in October 1915.
