Thomas was the eldest son of T.S. and Annie Hurrell of Whalley Range. He was born in 1896, educated at St. Margarets School, Manchester Central High School and entered Manchester University in 1914 to study history. From November 1915 to March 1916 Thomas was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. In 1916 he passed part one of his degree. He enslited on 20th Match 1916 with 29th Battalion the Royal Fusiliers and the Officer Cadet Battalion. Thomas served on the Western Front and died of influenza at a military hospital near Catterrick in December 1918. During the war he wrote to Prof. Tout about his time in France, application for a commission, morale, tanks and demobilisation.
