Lieutenant, 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Died 4th November 1918.

Buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.

William was the eldest son of Andrew Hodge, a calico printer’s colour expert. He was born in 1896 at Alexandria, Dumbartonshire and attended the Vale of Leven Academy, Buxton College and Silcoates School, Wakefield. In 1914 he was living in Whaley Bridge and began his studies at Manchester University and immediately joined the University Officer Training Corps. On 28th January 1915 he was gazetted and nine months later was serving in France. He was wounded in July 1917, not serioulsy, and again in July 1918, that time being gunshot wounds to his right arm and back. He was evacuated to England and spent some time in recovery in Bristol and Scotland before returning to France in early July 1918. In November 1918 he died of broncho-pneumonia at 20th General Hospital Camiers, near Etaples, in France. He left effects worth £259 17s 2d to his father.

The University 1922 Roll Of Service states him to be a Captain, but this does not match with newspaper or Commonwealth War Graves Commission information. However, another researcher who has accessed William’s service record and found that he was temporarily promoted to Captain for a week in July 1916 when he was temporarily commanding a battalion.
