Leonard, born in 1898 at Pendleton, was the second of three sons of Arthur Dean of Irlams o’ th’ Height. He was educated at Keswick School where he was head of the school and captain of cricket and football. In 1915 he came to Manchester University to study law while articled to Walder, Dean and Co., solicitors, Manchester. He later passed the entrance examination for and attended Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In April 1917 he was gazetted to The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and went to France in September 1917.He was killed on 3rd October 1918.
