Tom was the son of John and Ann West of Stalybridge. He was born on 4th August 1888 and attended Stalybridge Technical School gaining the William Summers Scholarship and entering Manchester University in 1907. He graduated with a BSc. in 1910 and gained his MSc. in 1911. From November 1908 to September 1913 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. He moved to Canada and was a lecturer in metallurgy at McGill University and a member of the Canadian Officer Training Corps. On 1st January 1916 he was commissioned with the 5th Regiment Royal Highlanders of Canada (42nd Battalion). His military papers show that he was 5 feet 10.5 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 24 to 36 inches. He was killed in action at Sailly on 29th September 1918 and his will written on 15th March 1917 left his estate worth £126 2s 8d to his mother.
