Charles was the son of Henry, a jeweller’s manager, and Emma Adelaide Case of Widnes. He was born in 1896 and went to Widnes Secondary School. In 1915 he entered Manchester University. from November 1915 to January 1916 he was a member of the University Training Corps. He enlisted on 13th November 1916 and was commissioned in 1917. He served with the 11th Battalion Manchester Regiment before transferring to the Royal Air Force as an observer. He was noted missing from duty operations on 29th September 1918 when the Bristol F.2b fighter he was in was seen spinning down out of control near St. Quentin. Later reports show him to have been buried at Uplands Cemetery. He left effects worth £137 14s 8d to his father.
