Herbert was the son of Josiah Goldsmith of Douglas, Isle of Man. He was born in 1892 and attended Douglas Secondary School before entering Manchester University in 1912, He graduated with a B.A. in 1915. Herbert was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from October 1912 to February 1916. His records show that he enlisted as a private (No. 3962) with the Manchester Regiment before being gazetted on 24th July 1916 with the Lancashire Fusiliers. During his service on the Western Front he was gassed. He died on 27th September 1918 at the Canal du Nord.
