Clement was born in 1894 at Derby, son of Elam (a mechanical draughtsman) and Amelia Eaves of Heath Bank, 3 Didsbury Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport. He was an Engineering Apprentice with Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day (Engineers), Hazel Grove, and in 1910-11, age 16, enrolled for 1st Year Engineering. Apprentice Course, then in 1911-12 2nd Year Engineering Apprentice Course was a Special Day Student. He enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Dunfermline and was appointed to the Royal Flying Corps on 18th June 1917. On 21st September 1918 Clement was serving as an observer on a bombing mission when the Handley Page aircraft he was reported to have been shot down near Metz. He left effects worth £112 13s 2d to his father.
