John was born in 1892 at Poulton-Le-Fylde to William B. Corless. He attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School and entered Manchester University in 1910 to study dentistry. He joined the University Officer Training Corps in his first year of studies and was commissioned in September 1914. He was serving with the King’s Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, but at some point resigned to resume his dental studies before again joining the army with the Sherwood Foresters. He was killed at Holnon near St. Quentin in September 1918. He left effects worth £161 14s 6d to Alices Marian Corless, a spinster, presumably his mother.
