Alfred was the son of George, a Justice of the Peace and clothier, and Alice Jane Brownson. He was born in 1887 at Hyde and attended Tettenhall College, Staffordshire. In 1904 he entered Manchester University to study arts. When war broke out he was a director of George Brownson Ltd., Hyde. From November 1915 to February 1916 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps and was gazetted to the Welsh Regiment. He was killed near the Grande Couronne Lake Doiran, Salonica/Macedonia. He left effects worth £5935 3s 6d to his father.
