Francis was born in Glasgow. He was married to Mary Jane, had 3 children, and lived in Stockport. In the 1901 census he was living with his father, a widower, two sisters and a brother, in Salford and was a grocer’s vanman. He had worked for the Manchester Corporation, Manchester Education Committee, and as a trainer at The Tech. He is believed to have served with “B” Company 18th Battalion Manchester Regiment as private 10300 before transferring the to Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
