Walter was born in 1899 at Rochdale to Henry, a printer, and Lucy Ormerod. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and joined Manchester University in 1915. From October 1916 to Aug 1917 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps when he enlisted. In June 1918 he was commissioned. He was serving as a pilot in the Royal Air Force when he was reported missing in later August 1918 while his aircraft was acting as part of an escort to a bombing mission. He left effects worth £135 4s 7d to his father. Originally buried at Oisy-Le-Virger German Cemetery, suggesting he was found behind enemy lines, he was later reburied in the 1920s, identifiable from his clothing, buttons and a list and plan of the German cemetery.
