Cecil was born on 19th September 1897 to William Somerville, a merchant. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School 1912-1916 and on 25th February 1916 he was admitted as a University Special Student to read 1st Year Practical Chemistry. He lived at 32 Egerton Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. He enlisted in the Manchester Regiment as Private 202557, transferred to the Royal Flying Corp where he was awarded RFC and British Medals. He was an observer in an Armstrong Whitworth FK 8 on 24th August 1918 and was reported missing presumed dead after his plane was believed to have been brought down, presumably by the enemy, in flames.
