James was born in 1897 at Todmorden to John Young Gaukroger, a councillor, and his wife Rachel Alice. He was educated at Sir John Deane Grammar School, Northwich. In January 1915 he joined the University Officer Training Corps leaving in December 1915. He was commissioned in May 1917 and served as a pilot with the Royal Air Force. He was last seen in the Peronne District near Brie on 8th August 1918. His brother, Hubert, had been killed by shell fire in April 1917.
