Herbert was the son of Herbert, a cotton merchant and manufacturer, and Harriet Senior. He was born at Chorlton-cum-Hardy in 1896 and educated at Bryn Derwen School, Old Colwyn and Uppingham. When war broke out he was a salesman for his fathers company. From August to October 1915 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps and in December 1915 he was gazetted with the Manchester Regiment. In July 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant and wounded in September that year. On 17th April 1918 he was attached to the Royal Berskshire Regiment, and a few weeks latet, in late May 1918, he was missing and later confirmed killed near Montigny in France. He left effects worth £451 9s to his father.
