John was born in 1889 at Haslingden, Lancashire to Joshua, a spinner, and Margaret Nuttall. He attended Helmshire Council School, winning two scholarships, and Haslingden Secondary School, where he won another scholarship to Manchester University where he began his studies in 1915. He was a member of Musbury Church and Sunday School.
In late February 1916 John enlisted with the Grenadier Guards. He was killed in France by a shell in June 1918.
